But wily old Mercedes was ready for that play with a new CLS, featuring the wow-factor interior from the current E-Class and some new engines, including a 2. Now, you could argue that the 6 GT is no CLS copy, because while the CLS and A7 favour style over practicality, the taller 6 GT boasts space aplenty but, to some fashionistas, looks about as dapper as a pear-shaped sideboard.
Tickling any of their accelerators will generate effortless pace from little more than tick-over. Yet the more powerful CLS obliterates its competition, not just feeling the quickest but proving so in our tests. The mph sprint, for instance, takes 5. However, it does transmit a few more vibrations through to the controls inside than the others. The A7 is easily the most restful as the miles begin to rack up, though. And tyre noise at 70mph is almost as well stifled as in the A7, although there is more wind noise.
It settles down at higher speeds, though, to feel broadly similar to the 6 GT on a motorway, with just a little shimmy through your seat on ruffled sections. The optional four-wheel steering fitted to our test car makes the A7 the most agile at urban speeds but can make it feel a bit nervous above 30mph. In comparison, the taller 6 GT leans like a yacht in a storm, and the dead-weight steering gives you very little confidence to push on.
A lot of pedal travel also means the brakes feel the least reassuring, although the 6 GT still managed the second-shortest stopping distance from 70mph behind the A7, with the CLS third. What Car? BMW took a little longer to turn onto Savile Row, first revealing the Concept Gran Coupe show car inwhich only needed light tailoring to become this stunning 6-series Gran Coupe.
Output is horsepower and pound-feet of torque, channeled to the rear wheels via the same ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic found in the A7. Our Audi had less stuff on it than our BMW, eschewing such frills as proximity-key access, digital-readout climate control, and an adjustable suspension.
We drove through treacherous thunderstorms, endless highway miles, and twisty back roads to find out that the answer is no. As impressive as it is in photos, the Gran Coupe is even more striking in person, with intricate contours, glitzy LED lights, and a squashed, purposeful stance magnified by its considerable length and huge wheels.
Overall balance is good, and dynamic anti-roll bars keep the body flat in bends; the brakes are reassuringly firm, requiring feet to stop from 70 mph. But get it on a twisty two-lane, and the GC feels bigger and heavier than the A7, even more so than its extra 1. Expansion joints and rough pavement send shivers through the chassis and up your vertebrae. The electrically assisted power steering, as in most new BMWs, is short on feedback despite being precise and weighted to cornering loads.
With our test gear attached, the i achieved 60 mph in 5. Aggressive shifts in the sportier modes heighten the sense of acceleration, as does having pound-feet of torque available at rpm.
The A7, however, was slightly quicker in every acceleration test, and it stopped from 70 mph in eight fewer feet. The Gran Coupe proved fantastic to look at and to be seen in, one of the zootiest large cars on the road.
Audi A7 vs. BMW 6-Series
But read on if you want to know why the A7 is the better car. It is a graceful thing, hunkered down at the rear and devoid of excess ornamentation. Like the BMW, it has presence on the road and at valet stands, but its visuals are more subdued. Negatives include some panels that looked swiped from the VW parts bin and not enough lateral or thigh support from the front seats.
Audi A7 Sportback vs BMW 6 Series GT vs Mercedes CLS
With the throttle and steering in dynamic mode, the Audi feels eager and smaller than it is, its helm light, precise, and long on feedback. In the tight confines of wooded two-lanes, the A7 is the better place to be. The pound Audi ran to 60 mph in 5.Ford Explorer vs. Ford Expedition. GMC Acadia vs. Buick Enclave. German brands are credited with penning gorgeous sedans with the sloping roofline of a coupe. The blueprint seemed odd at first, but it brought about the Audi A7 and BMW 6-Series — two of the best-looking four-door luxury vehicles on the road.
Both may not have the same amount of rear head room as the sedans they're based off of, but that's the only compromise you have to make.
Performance, luxury, and exclusivity are the same, if not more. Large luxury sedans don't get updated often, which makes a special year, because Audi rolled out with a heavily-revised A7.
It has a more modern look, more high-tech features, and a lower price tag. The A7 is the more powerful option, as well. It comes with a 3. The base engine in the 6-Series is a turbocharged 3. Because of the A7's hatchback-like trunk, the vehicle is rated to hold more cargo than the 6-Series.
With the rear seats folded down, the A7 can hold 49 cubic feet of cargo, while the 6-Series Gran Coupe can only hold There are a load of 6-Series body styles and trims to choose from with BMW's option.
